Excellence exemplified: Three CCU educators awarded professorships

The E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University has awarded professorships to three faculty members who exemplify excellence in teaching, research and service. The following professorships have been awarded for 2018-2019: The Vereen Teaching Impact Award to Mitchell Church; the Baxley Applied Impact Award to Monica Fine; and the Blanton Distinguished Research Impact Award to Carol Megehee.

“The professorships in the Wall College of Business are provided by generous benefactors to encourage exemplary performance in teaching, research and service,” said Barbara Ritter, dean of the Wall College. “This year, each of our recipients has role-modeled the highest level of performance in their area.”

These professorships were created in 2015 to annually recognize professors who have a positive impact on the University community and surrounding areas. The criteria for these awards are service to the students, school and profession; enhancement of the Wall College reputation; substantial contributions to the application of sound business practice; the ability to relate real-world experiences into the classroom; dedication; character; quality of teaching; quality and number of scholarly works; and appropriate professional and personal conduct.

Mitchell Church, assistant professor of management, has been recognized as an exemplary teacher. Student feedback suggests that Church is one of the best and most knowledgeable professors in the college; has an excellent rapport with his students; goes above and beyond to explain class material; and conducts very informative, thought-provoking and interesting lectures. He also published two highly regarded peer-reviewed journal articles during this time period.

The Vereen Teaching Impact Award was named for the late Col. Lindsey H. Vereen, who was a member of the Coastal business faculty from 1966 to 1977. Vereen was a decorated World War II veteran who earned a master’s degree in industrial management from the University of Pittsburgh.

Carol Megehee, professor of marketing, published research in several well-known academic publications. Megehee, along with Graham Ferguson and Arch G. Woodside, received the 2017 Research Paper of the Year from Curtin University’s School of Marketing for Culture, Religiosity and Economic Configural Models explaining Tipping-Behavior Prevalence Across Nations. She has also presented her research at several national and international marketing conferences in Boston, Orlando and Tokyo.

The Blanton Distinguished Impact Award was named in honor of the late James P. Blanton, a local businessman, conservationist, legislator, and champion of education and founder of CCU.

Monica Fine, associate professor of marketing and chair of the Department of Marketing and Hospitality, Resort and Tourism Management, has been active in the campus and local community. Fine helped create a scholarship for marketing and hospitality students; she is the faculty adviser for the American Marketing Association; and she mentors marketing majors who are interested in pursuing internships. She is a graduate of the Leadership Grand Strand program and has also volunteered for Toys for Tots, the Youth Leadership Academy and Caleb’s Dragonfly Dreams. The Baxley Applied Impact Award was named for the late Col. William Baxley Jr., a longtime CCU business professor and administrator.

“The work of Megehee, Fine and Church builds upon the high reputation of the Wall College, and we are proud to have these individuals as part of our faculty,” Ritter said.
