Research Opportunities

Professionals, scholars, and students are invited to submit research proposals in the humanities, arts, social sciences, and behavioral sciences to the Baruch Institute for South Carolina Studies (BISCS).  Studies can include on-site work at Hobcaw Barony and off-site work. Complete this form and email it to Dr. Rick Almeida or Dr. Madison Cates. A committee will review each proposal and respond to applicants usually within two weeks.

To work off-site, scholars can access many items and request digital copies through Hobcaw Barony’s four distinct archives at http://hobcawbarony.org/about-hobcaw/film-archives/

For a list of research projects to date, see http://hobcawbarony.org/research/research-projects/.

Harry M. Lightsey Jr. Visiting Scholars Fellowships

  • Periodically, the Baruch Foundation issues a call for proposals for grants and fellowships, including the Lightsey Visiting Scholars Fellowship. Available to faculty at any four-year university in South Carolina, this award offers scholars the opportunity to spend one or more week(s) in residence at Hobcaw Barony within a calendar year.

  • This program welcomes proposals from a variety of disciplines, but especially encourages those that might study the unique ecology of the property through the core fields of applied forestry or marine biology, the history of the property and its role in the development of this area and nation, the unique buildings and facilities at Hobcaw, and/or the noted artist represented in the collections. However, other appropriate subjects will be considered.

  • More information will be provided at a later date.
