Held every October, Campus Sustainability Month is an international celebration of sustainability in higher education. This October, Sustain Coastal will host events on campus to engage and inspire students, faculty, and staff to become sustainability change agents. See our full calendar of October events below.

Week of October 1  - October 8

Saturday, October 1, 2022

Zero Waste Football

Time: 4pm
Location: Brooks Stadium

CCU’s Zero Waste efforts help decrease overall waste from athletic and other events. Waste from all home football games will be either recycled, composted, or donated during the game. With Zero Waste Stations throughout the stadium and in designated tailgate areas, you will be able help support our efforts in making the game a Zero Waste success. Zero Waste Staff and Volunteers will be available at each station to assist and educate about these efforts.

Weigh the Waste 

Time: 11am-1pm
Location: Hicks Dining Hall

Weigh the Waste is a monthly event series to educate on the impacts of food waste and composting on CCU's campus. Each month our Eco-Rep Leaders will visit Hick's Dining Hall to educate students, faculty, and staff on sustainable dining tips.

Boom & Bust Film Screening

Time: 5-7pm
Location: Coastal Theater (LJSU A-110) 

Join Sustain Coastal for a free documentary film screening and brief discussion of Boom & Bust. This film will give students insight into challenges that arise for people and places when economic, health, and environmental well-being interests conflict. It will also present an example of how communities can come together to face complex issues.

Campus Cleanup with AKA Sorrority

Time: 1pm
Location: Meet in front of Hicks Dining Hall 

Join Sustain Coastal and Alpha Kappa Alpha for a CCU Campus Cleanup! We will meet in front of Hicks Dining Hall and collect litter around University Housing, using Citizen Science we will log the litter we find into the South Carolina Aquarium's Litter Free Digital Journal. All instructions and supplies will be provided. Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing.

Sunrise Yoga in the Park

Join Sustain Coastal for a 50-minute sunrise Hatha Yoga session in Blanton Park, in the spirit of Campus Sustainability Month! This is an opportunity to re-center and reconnect with nature in one of the most beautiful green spaces on campus. This event is FREE and open to all CCU students, faculty, and staff. Keynote Speaker Livestream - Global Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education

Join Sustain Coastal Eco-Reps in person for a pizza party and livestream of the AASHE Conference's Keynote Speaker, Dr. Elizabeth Popp Berman. Dr. Berman is the Richard H. Price Professor of Organizational Studies and (by courtesy) Sociology at the University of Michigan, and director of the Organizational Studies Program. Her new book, Thinking Like an Economist: How Efficiency Replaced Equality in U.S. Public Policy, shows how economic reasoning came to dominate Washington between the 1960s and the 1980s, and how it continues to constrain progressive ambitions today.

Pop-Up Thrift Shop

Time: 10am-2pm
Location: Prince Lawn  

The Pop-Up Thrift Shop brings together the three legs of the sustainability stool – environment, social, and economic. Not only do we save items from the landfill, but we sell them back to the campus community inexpensively and help students earn scholarships at CCU. Items are collected from Campus Salvage at the end of the year and during ongoing monthly donations. Most items are sold for only $1. Only credit card payments are accepted. All money raised from the thrift shop will go to support the CCU Endowed Sustainability Scholarship Fund. Learn more .

Join Sustain Coastal Eco-Reps in person for a pizza party and livestream of the AASHE Conference's Keynote Speaker, Dr. April Anson. Dr. April Anson is an Assistant Professor of Public Humanities at San Diego State University, core faculty for the Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs, and affiliate faculty in American Indian Studies. Her research explores the historical and ongoing connections between climate change, white supremacy, and political sovereignty while also attending to Indigenous environmental justice traditions that eclipse those relations.
